Der Kampfpanzer „Challenger 1“ wurde 1983 in der britischen

Armee als Nachfolger des „Chieftain“ eingeführt. Er hat eine

120 mm Zugrohrkanone „L11A5“ und eine für diesen Panzer

speziell entwickelte „Chobham-Verbundpanzerung“, die her-

vorragenden Schutz im Gefecht bietet. Dieser Panzerung ver-

dankt der „Challenger 1“ auch seine kantige Form. Der Turm

lässt sich innerhalb von 13 Sekunden um 360° schwenken. Der

„Challenger 1“ erreicht bei einem Gewicht von 62 t und einer

Motorleistung von 1.200 PS eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von

56 km/h. Angetrieben wird er von einem 12-Zylinder Diesel -

motor. Um die Reichweite zu vergrößern, können zusätzliche

Kraftstofffässer am Heck montiert werden. Die Besatzung be -

steht aus 4 Mann.

The “Challenger 1” main battle tank was introduced into the

British Army in 1983 as the successor to the “Chieftain”. It has

a 120 mm L11A5 rifled tank gun and Chobham steel armour

developed specially for this tank, which offers outstanding

protection in combat. The “Challenger 1” owes its angular

shape to this armour. The turret can be traversed through 360°

within 13 seconds. With a weight of 62 tonnes and an engine

capacity of 1,200 bhp, the “Challenger 1” can reach a top

speed of 56 km/h. It is driven by a 12-cylinder diesel engine. In

order to increase its range additional fuel tanks can be mount-

ed at the rear. It has a 4 man crew.
