INSTALL THE BATTERY
GMR4055 modelsuseNiMHAArechargeableandGMR4088
batteries(included)or3AAalkalinenon-rechargeablebatteries
(notincluded).GMR4060modelsuseLithiumIonbatterypacks.
Toinstallthebatteries/batterypack:
1. Unscrewandremovethebatterycompartmentcover.
2. Installthebatteries/batterypackintothebatterycompartment.Be
certaintofollowtheinstructionswrittenonthelabelonthebattery
pack.Installingthebatteries/batterypackincorrectlywillprevent
theunitfromoperating.
3. Replaceandscrewinthebatterycompartmentcover.
BATTERY LEVEL AND
LOW BATTERY ALERT
Thisunithasabatterylevelmeteronthedisplaytoindicatethe
statusofthebatteries.Whenthebatteryintheunitislow,the
batterylevelmetericon flashes.Rechargethebatteries/
batterypackimmediately.Ifyouareusingalkalinebatteries
(GMR4055andGMR4088modelsonly),youmustreplacethe
alkalinebatteriesinordertocontinueusingtheradio.
CHARGING THE RADIO
Ifusingrechargeablebatteries/batterypacks,tworadioscanbe
chargeddirectlybyusingthesuppliedchargingcradle.Asingle
radiocanchargeusingtheminiUSBporttoconnecttoaUSB
powersource.Forfastestcharging,turnofftheradiobefore
charging.
Warning!Toavoidtheriskofpersonalinjuryorpropertydamage
fromfireorelectricalshock,onlyusetheUnidenaccessories
specificallydesignatedforthisproduct.
Warning!DonotattempttorechargeAlkalinebatteries
(GMR4055 modelsonly).andGMR4088
Using the miniUSB Port
1. ConnecttheincludedACadapterwithminiUSBconnectorcable
totheradio'sminiUSBport.Connecttheotherendtoanoutlet
thatprovidesUSBchargingpower(NOTtoaUSBhub).
2. Chargethebatteries/batterypackfor16hoursuntilthebattery
indicatoreitherstopsflashing(GMR4055andGMR4088models
only)orturnsoff(GMR4060modelsonly).
Using the Charging Cradle
1. ConnecttheincludedACadapterwithUSBconnectorcabletothe
chargingcradle'sminiUSBport.Connecttheotherendtoa
standard120VACwalloutlet.
2. Setthechargingcradleonthedeskortabletop,andplacethe
radiointhechargingcradlewiththekeypadfacingforward.
3. Chargethebatterypackfor14hours.ForGMR4055and
GMR4088models,thebatteryindicatorissolidandthecharger
LEDsturnoff.ForGMR4060models,thebatteryindicatorturns
offandthechargerLEDsturnoff.
Note:
• UseonlythesuppliedbatteryandACadapterorapproved
accessoriesfromUniden.
• Chargetimemayvarydependingonthebatteryliferemaining.
• Donotattempttorechargealkalinebatteries(GMR4055and
GMR4088modelsonly).Doingsocancreateasafetyhazardor
damagetheradio.
• Thebatterymustbeinstalledfortheunittooperate,eveniftheunit
isalsoconnectedtoexternalpower.
• Ifbatterypowerislow,youcannotoperatetheradioevenusing
externalpower.Allowthebatteriestochargebeforeusing.Ifyoutry
totransmitwhilepowerislow,theradiowillautomaticallyturnoff.
USING EARBUDS  
GMR4055-2CKHS,GMR4060-2CKHS,andGMR4088-2CKHS
also comewithVOXearbuds.Youcanuseearbudsformore
privatecommunications.Tousetheearbud,lifttherubbercover
fromovertheheadsetjack,thenplugintheearbud.
Important: Your radio is not weather resistant when using 
earbuds. After removing an earbud, be sure to fully press the jack 
cover into place to restore its weather resistant capability
USING THE RADIO
Turning the Radio On and Adjusting the Volume
1. Pressandhold toturntheradioON.IincreasetheMENU/

Adjusting the Sound (Key Beeps)

Choosing a Channel
Yourradiohas22channelsand121Privacycodesyoucanuseto
talktoothers.Inordertospeaktosomeone,eachofyoumustbe
settothesamechannelandPrivacycode.
Withtheradioin"Normal"operatingmode,pressthe  / CH ▲CH ▼
keytoincreaseordecreasethechannelnumberdisplayed.
Note:Channels 1-7 have a typical range of up to 40 miles.  
Channels 8-14 have a typical maximum range of up to 5 miles. 
Channels 15-22 have a typical range of up to 40 miles. You can 
see which GMRS or FRS channel is active by the icon. The hi 
icon is displayed while on GMRS channels, and the   icon is lo
displayed while on FRS channels.
Talking on Your Radio
Totalktoothersusingtheradio:
1. Pressandholdthe buttonandspeakinaclear,normalvoicePTT
about2-3inchesawayfromthemicrophone.Whileyouare
transmitting,the iconappearsonthedisplay.Toavoidcutting
offthefirstpartofyourtransmission,pauseslightlyafterpressing
the buttonbeforeyoustarttalking.PTT
2. Whenyouhavefinishedspeaking,releasethe button.YouPTT
cannowreceiveincomingcalls.Whilereceiving, displays.
Monitor Mode Feature
Yourradioallowsyoutolistenforweaksignalsonthecurrent
channelatthepressofakey.
ToturnONMonitormode:
Pressandhold for2secondsuntiltwobeepssound.WX/MON
Thereceivercircuitstaysopen,andbothnoiseandweaksignals
canbeheard.Theiconstopsblinkinganddisappears.
ToturnOFFMonitormode:
Pressandhold for2secondstoreturnto"Normal"WX/MON
mode;twobeepssoundandthe iconstopsblinkingand
disappears.

Theradiowillalsovibratetoremindyouthatyoumissedacall.
Silentmodeisdisabledfor15secondswhenyoutransmit,receive,
orpressanyotherbutton.

Note:To prevent unwanted silent alerts, be sure to use a Privacy

Missed Call Alerts
IfyoureceiveanincomingcallwhileSilentmodeisonanddonot
respond,theradiowillturnontheMissedCallicon.
Theradiowilladditionallyremindyouofamissedcallbyvibrating
everyminuteafterthecallfor3minutes.
Key Lock

LCD Backlight
TheLCDBacklightautomaticallyturnsONwhenanykey(except
the button)ispressed.Itstayslitfor10secondsbeforePTT
turningOFF.
Roger Beep
RogerBeepisabeepsoundthatthatissenttoindicatetheendof
transmission(bothPTTandVOXtransmission).RogerBeepcan
beheardthroughthespeakerwhenbothRogerBeepandKey
BeeparesettoON.WhenRogerBeepissettoONandKeyBeep

TheradioisequippedwithanLEDflashlightthatcanalsoflashan

cyclethroughtheoptions.

• Pressandhold-turnonSOSsignal.

Note:The flashlight will also work when the radio is off.
USING THE WEATHER RADIO 
YourradiocanreceiveweatherbroadcastsfromtheNOAA
NationalWeatherService.WhenintheWeatherRadioAlertmode,
thesystemfunctionsasitdoesinstandardmodebutalsomonitors
theselectedweatherchannelforalertswhennotcommunicating.
WhileusingtheWeatherRadio,youarenotabletoreceiveGMRS
communications.
YourradiocanreceiveweatherbroadcastsfromtheNOAA
NationalWeatherService.WhenintheWeatherRadioAlertmode,
thesystemfunctionsasitdoesinstandardmodebutalsomonitors
theselectedweatherchannelforalertswhennotcommunicating.
