Die Growler ersetzt die EA-6B Prowler und basiert auf der

F/A-18F Super Hornet, der Doppelsitzer-Version. Die F/A-18E/F

Super Hornet ist ein überschallschnelles Jagd- und Bodenangriffs-

ﬂ ugzeug. Die Super Hornet wurde bei der United States

Navy im Jahr 1999 in Dienst gestellt, wo sie seit 2006 die F-14

Tomcat ersetzt und Seite an Seite mit der Version F/A-18C

Hornet dienen wird. Die Super Hornet wurde 1992 von der

U.S. Navy bestellt und ﬂ og am 29. November 1995 zum ersten

Mal. Im Jahr 1995 wurde mit der Produktion der F/A-18E/F

begonnen. 1999 durchlief die Super Hornet Einsatztests sowie

weitere Bewertungsverfahren der U.S. Navy und wurde im

Februar 2000 akzeptiert. Obwohl sich das allgemeine Design

und die Systeme gleichen, unterscheidet sich die Super Hornet

doch in vielerlei Hinsicht von der Ursprungsversion F/A-18

Hornet. Die Super Hornet wird informell auch als „Rhino“

bezeichnet, um sie von den früheren „Legacy“ Hornets zu

unterscheiden und um Verwechslungen im Funkverkehr zu

vermeiden. Die U.S. Navy setzt derzeit sowohl den F/A-18E

Einsitzer als auch den F/A-18F Zweisitzer als Kampfﬂ ugzeug

ein, die damit die Stellung der außer Dienst gestellten F-14,

der A-6 Intruder, S-3 Viking und der KA-6D einnehmen. Im

Vergleich zur ursprünglichen Hornet ist die Super Hornet etwa 20%

größer, sie hat ein 3.000 kg höheres Leer- und ein 6.800 kg

höheres Maximalgewicht. Sie kann 33% mehr Treibstoff in internen

Tanks mitführen, so dass ihre Einsatz-Reichweite um 40% höher

ist als die der „Legacy“ Hornet. Im August 2006 begannen die

ersten Testﬂ üge mit der EA-18G, ab September 2007 wurden

die ersten Serienmaschinen ausgeliefert. Die EA-18G Growler

wird von der US Navy als Störﬂ ugzeug zur elektronischen Kriegs-

führung eingesetzt und ersetzt die EA-6B Prowler. Ihre Aufgabe

ist es, gegnerische Kommunikations- und Radareinrichtungen zu

überwachen und anzugreifen. Für die Bekämpfung von Radar-

stationen verfügt sie über HARM- Lenkwaffen. Die US Navy hat

insgesamt 114 EA-18G für 10 Staffeln bestellt.

Based the two-seater version on the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the

Growler replaces the EA-6B Prowler. The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet

is a supersonic ﬁ ghter / ground attack aircraft. The Super Hornet

entered service with the United States Navy in 1999. Since 2006

it has replaced the F-14 Tomcat and is deployed side by side with

the F/A-18C Hornet. The Super Hornet was ordered by the U.S.

Navy in 1992 and its ﬁ rst ﬂ ight took place on 29 November 1995.

Production of the F/A-18E/F began in 1995. In 1999 the Super

Hornet went through a series of user tests and other assessment

procedures by the U.S. Navy and was accepted in February 2000.

Although the general design and systems are similar the Super

Hornet differs in many ways from the original version F/A-18

Hornet. The Super Hornet is informally referred to as the „Rhino“

to distinguish it from the earlier „Legacy“ Hornets and to avoid

confusion during radio communications. The U.S. Navy currently

uses both the F/A-18E single seat and the F/A-18F two-seater as

ﬁ ghter aircraft, which allows it to take the place of decommissi-

oned F-14‘s, A-6 Intruder‘s, S-3 Viking‘s and KA-6D‘s. Compared to

the original Hornet, the Super Hornet is about 20% larger, has a

3000kg (6615lbs) higher empty-weight and a 6800kg (15000lbs)

higher maximum all-up weight. It can carry 33% more fuel in

internal tanks, its radius of action is therefore 40% higher than that

of the „Legacy“ Hornet. The ﬁ rst test ﬂ ights with the EA-18G began

in August 2006. The ﬁ rst production aircraft were delivered in

September 2007. The EA-18G Growler is used by the U.S. Navy in

the electronic warfare role to disrupt enemy communications. Its

mission is to monitor and attack enemy communication and radar

facilities. It carries HARM guided-missiles to attack radar stations.

The U.S. Navy has ordered a total of 114 EA-18G to equip 10 Squa-

drons.
