Die U-Boote Typ II der deutschen Kriegsmarine waren kleine

Einhüllen-U-Boote, die für den Küsteneinsatz in Nord- und Ostsee

konzipiert waren. Mit ihnen setzte Deutschland ab Anfang 1935

den Bau von Unterseebooten nach dem Ende des ersten

Weltkrieges fort. Der Typ II war stark motorisiert, sehr manövrier-

fähig und konnte dank der Schnelltauchzelle innerhalb von 25

Sekunden abtauchen. Bei einer Bauzeit von knapp vier Monaten

stellte die deutsche Marine bis 1941 50 Einheiten in Dienst.

Während der Besetzung Norwegens bewährten sich Typ II-Boote

bei Erkundungsfahrten in den engen Fjorden und vor der Küste

des Landes. Einige Boote der bereits vergrößerten Version IID,

wurden nach Kriegsausbruch auch zum Minenlegen vor der briti-

schen Küste eingesetzt.

Mit nur 5 Torpedos bewaffnet und im Inneren für 25 Männer zu

eng für eine längere Fahrt, sollten die Boote ab 1941 nur noch für

die Ausbildung verwendet werden. Aber bereits im Spätsommer

1941 begann man mit der Überführung von U9, U18, U19, U20,

U23 und U24, alle vom Typ IIB, zum rumänischen Hafen Constanza

am Schwarzen Meer. Bis Ende 1944 waren die Boote der 30. U-

Flottille im Kampf gegen die sowjetische Marine erfolgreich.

Sechs U-Boote Typ II sind bei Kampfhandlungen verloren gegan-

gen. Im Zuge der Kapitulation 1945 versenkte sich der überwie-

gende Teil selbst.

The German Navy Type IIs were small single-hulled submarines

designed for coastal service in the North Sea and the Baltic. From

the beginning of 1935, with these Germany continued the con-

struction of submarines which had ceased after the end of the

First World War. The Type IIs had powerful engines, were very

manoeuvrable and thanks to their rapid diving cell could submer-

ge within 25 seconds. With a production time of only four months,

by the end of 1942 the German Navy had 50 units in service.

During the occupation of Norway the Type II submarines proved

themselves during reconnaissance missions in the narrow fjords

and off the coast. After war broke out some of the enlarged ver-

sion IIDs were also used for mine-laying off the British coast.

Armed with only 5 torpedoes and with space for a 25-man crew

these submarines were too narrow for long voyages and from

1941 were only used for training purposes. But by the late summer

of 1941, the Germans had begun to transfer the U9, U18, U19, U29

and U24, all type IIBs, to the Romanian port of Constanza on the

Black Sea. By the end of 1944 the submarines of the 30th flotilla

had been successful in the battle against the Soviet Navy. Six Type

II submarines were lost in action. Following the capitulation in

1945 the majority were scuttled.
