2 -Board D.1 On iagn tics D) IIos (OB
The rst genera of -Board Diagnostics ( OBD I) was tion On ca edll
developed by the ornia Air sources Board (AR and Calif Re B)
implemen ed t in 1988 to mon or some of the emission con ol it tr
components on vehicles. As technology evolved and the desire to
improve the On-Board Diagnos c system increased, a new generatioti n
of On-Board Dia s c syst was devel ed. is second genera ogno ti em op Th ti n
of On-Board Dia s c gula s is cagno ti re tion lled "OBD ". II
The OBD II system is de gned to mon or emis on ol systemsi it si contr s
and key engine components by pe orming e her nuous or rf it conti
pe odic te s of ecic components v icle cond ons. When a ri st sp and eh iti
problem is det ted, the OBD II system turns on a warning lamp (MILec )
on the v icle ins umeh tr ent anel p to alert the driver typi lly by the ca
phrase of Check Engine or “ ” “Servi Engine Soce on”. The system will
al store impo informa on about the det ted ma unc so so rtant ti ec lf tion
that a t iciechn an an cu c ac rately fi find and x the problem. Here below
