FUNDAMENTALS
Condenser microphones require powering for proper function. Low-cost electret types are mainly battery
powered. Professional condenser microphones are remotely powered since batteries cannot provide the
voltage ncessary for extended dynamic response. Remote or phantom powering (P48, EC standard
EN61938; 7/97) requires balanced cabling. The positive (+) and negative (-) phase conductors of the
cable carry the positive supply of 48 Volts DC while the cable shield is connected to the negative side of
the power supply. Most mixing desks today feature integrated phantom powering although often lacking in
quality. In many cases it can be switched to all microphone inputs simultaneously only. In theory phantom
power will not damage dynamic microphones, but many users feel more than a little uneasy knowing that
there are 48 Volts going into their expensive dynamic microphone. On the importance of phantom power-
ing on sound quality read “Mikrofon Special”, Studio Magazin 1998, and visit www.schoeps.de/D-2004/
PDFs/Mikrofonbuch_Kap13.pdf on the web.
CONCEPT
The PAN48 is a professional quality dual phantom power supply for two condenser microphones that
meets the EC standard. The maximum continuous capacity is 10mA for each channel. In the case of both
conductors shorting to ground current draw is limited to 14mA. While it will not damage the PAN48 this
condition puts severe strain on the unit and should be repaired as quickly as possible. And anyway, who
wants to use a shorted microphone?. The unit is mains powered featuring an integrated switching power
supply especially designed for the PAN48. Permitting input voltages from 90 - 240V while maintaing
stable 48V phantom power supply it also prevents mains hum. Each PAN48 is carefully tested to meet
the highest safety standards. To prevent the risk of electric shock the mains transformers are tested with
4,5kV, and during final inspection each unit is tested for leakage current with 1500V between the mains
and secondary windings (at 230V the leakage current is approx. 70μA!).
CONNECTIONS
Connect condenser microphones to the female XLR inputs of the PAN48 using high quality balanced,
shielded XLR microphone cable only. Make sure your microphone type is suitable for remote 48V power-
ing. Use balanced XLR microphone cable to connect the corresponding male XLR outputs of the PAN48 to
the microphone inputs of your mixing desk. Signal output is DC-free, of course. Please ensure the unit’s
power switch is in the OFF poisition (O) before plugging into the mains outlet, and that the outlet is of
the 3-prong grounded type. After powering up a red LED lights up. If the LED is flashing this indicates a
fault condition, and the unit must be checked by a qualified technician and repaired, if necessary. Always
observe the connecting sequence to prevent damage to your microphones. DO NOT connect micro-
phones while the PAN48 is active to avoid popping noises during connection which may permanently
damage condenser microphones. The PAN48 features a soft start power supply to prevent harmful pops
at power-up.
